Make Perfect Pom-Pom’s Everytime
Who says you need a fancy pom-pom maker to make perfect pom-poms?
With just a terra cotta pot and two clothespins, you can create fluffy, perfectly round pom-poms every time! This method is quick, eco-friendly, and oddly satisfying—let’s dive in.
I have an abundance of terra cotta pots because I LOVE painting these flower pots and using them for all kinds of projects. This happened to work out perfectly for these pom-poms, and now my wheels are turning to see what else I can come up with!
I got this yarn at the Dollar Tree, so this was a very inexpensive DIY for a rainy day!

What You’ll Need
- Small terra cotta pot (3-4” diameter works best)
- 2 wooden clothespins
- Yarn (any weight or color)
- Scissors
DIY Pom-Pom Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Secure Your Yarn
Clip two clothespins on the rim of your terra cotta pot, opposite each other. These will hold your yarn in place while you wrap.
Step 2: Start Wrapping
Tuck the end of your yarn through the top of one clothespin, then start wrapping around the clothespins. Not too tight, but not so loose it will slip off. The more you wrap, the denser your pom-pom will be! (Pro tip: For a super fluffy pom-pom, wrap at least 100 times.)
Step 3: Tie It Off
Once you’re happy with the thickness, carefully slide the clothespins off the pot (they’ll stay together, thanks to the clothespins!). Loop about 6 inches of your yarn and get 5 or 6 strands together to tie the middle as tightly as possible—this is the key to a secure pom-pom.
Step 4: Snip & Fluff
Grab your scissors and cut through all the loops on both ends. Shake it out, then trim any uneven strands for a perfectly round finish.

Why This Method Works
- No special tools are required—just everyday items!
- The pot’s shape and size help to create a full, even pom-pom.
- Clothespins keep your yarn in place, making wrapping a breeze.
- Very little wasted yarn with this method.

Pom-Pom Tips
- Mix colors by wrapping two yarns together.
- Go jumbo by using a larger pot.
- Make fluffy or loose pom-poms depending on your project.
- You can use this method to make tassels as well.

Who knew a humble flower pot could be the secret to perfect pom-poms? This method is fast, fun, and foolproof—no more floppy or uneven pom-poms!
