Come In, and Be Merry: A Holiday Home Designed With the Thrifter In Mind
This holiday season, I’m embracing the art of the thrifted holiday—an approach to decorating that is as much about the joyful hunt as it is about the beautiful result. I want to show you how to use your collections and secondhand finds to create a home that doesn’t just look festive, but feels festive, engaging all five senses to build an atmosphere of warmth. So, pour yourself a cup of tea in your favorite mismatched mug, and join me for a Christmas Home Tour, designed with a thrifter’s keen eye for charm and a deep love for the stories behind the stuff.

The Thrifter’s Foundation: Curated Collections
To me, the best part of holiday decorating is pulling out all my favorite finds and giving them a moment to shine. It’s like a reunion with old friends, each one with its own story. I remember where I picked up every one of them.
The real stars of my tree are my beloved Blue Willow cups. I don’t have a single matching set, and that’s what I love about them. I’ve collected them one by one from thrift stores and flea markets over the years. This season, I simply tied them to the tree branches with a beautiful red satin or tartan ribbon, letting them dangle like the most unique ornaments you’ve ever seen.
To add a pop of fun and whimsy, I wove my red berry garland through the branches and even perched my red berry wreath right on top of the tree as a quirky, festive topper. Of course, twinkle lights are a non-negotiable must—they make everything magical. And at the base of it all sits my most treasured textile: my grandma’s quilted tree skirt. It’s the heart of the tree, a piece of family history.
I’ve carried that cozy, collected feeling over to the sofa with a pile of soft sweater throw blankets and tartan plaid pillows. It just begs you to curl up with a cup of cocoa.
And then there are my nutcrackers. I started this collection with my son when we were living in Germany, and each one holds a special memory. I love having them standing guard on the table—they’re more than just decor, they’re little reminders of adventures with Blake.

Now, you might wonder how all these different pieces come together without looking messy. My best thrifting tip is this: the secret isn’t in buying expensive things, it’s in being consistent. I stuck with a simple color story of blue, red, and green, with lots of tartan. When you have a color scheme that ties everything together, even the most different collections can look perfectly intentional and beautifully you.
Creating a Feeling: The Magic of the Senses
Once all my thrifted treasures are in place, the real magic happens when I turn on the atmosphere. It’s all about engaging the senses to make the house feel as warm and welcoming as it looks.
The Soundtrack of the Season
The second I start cooking dinner or tidying up, I ask my smart speaker to play Christmas music. It’s an instant mood-lifter that fills every room with cheer. It makes even washing dishes feel festive! I’ve put together all my favorite songs into a special playlist for you on Spotify.
A Twinkling, Layered Glow
As evening comes on early, I turn off the harsh overhead lights. That’s when the real magic begins. My fairy lights in the tree and my collection of vintage lamps cast a soft, warm glow around the room. This gentle lighting is what makes the whole “layered look” of my collections—the Blue Willow, the nutcrackers, the textiles—feel so cozy and inviting.
The Scent of Christmas
But for me, nothing says “Christmas” more than the smell. I keep a mini crockpot going with a simmer pot of mulled spices—cinnamon sticks, orange peels, and cloves. It makes my whole house smell incredible, like a holiday hug. And the best part? I use those same warm spices to brew a pot of spiced tea in the afternoon. It’s a simple trick, but honestly, nothing beats the smell of Christmas filling the air.
I love these Better Homes and Gardens candles to add around the house too.

eThe Feel of Home
This is where “cozy” becomes something you can actually feel. I love piling the sofa and my worn-in leather chairs with those soft sweater blankets and tartan pillows. It creates this nest-like feeling that just invites you to sink in and stay awhile. And speaking of those chairs, their buttery-soft, perfectly patina’d leather just adds to the feeling. This isn’t a “look but don’t touch” kind of room. It’s a room that asks you to get comfortable, curl your feet up, and run your hands over the nubby texture of a blanket. It’s all about comfort.

The Flavor of Our Traditions
And finally, the best sense of all—taste! For us, the holidays just wouldn’t be the same without the flavors we look forward to all year. I’ve been making that viral cranberry turkey, and oh my goodness, my family absolutely loves it. It’s become our new must-have centerpiece, tart and savory and so juicy. Serving it up on one of my thrifted platters, surrounded by all our other favorite sides, is the final, delicious piece of the puzzle. It’s the flavor that truly makes our holiday feast feel complete and full of love.

I hope this tour has inspired you to look at your own thrifted treasures with new eyes! The fun doesn’t have to stop here, though. I’m so excited to be part of a fantastic group of friends sharing their beautiful holiday homes as well, featuring 34 other stunning virtual home tours. Each one is filled with its own unique beauty and inspiration. You can find the complete list of tours linked for you at the end of this post—happy home touring!
