How Long Does Spray Paint Take To Dry
Whether you’re a professional artist, a DIY enthusiast, or just looking to spruce up a piece of furniture, understanding how long does it take spray paint to dry is an essential factor in your project planning.
While a variety of factors can affect the drying time, including the type of spray paint, the humidity and temperature of the environment, and even the surface being painted, we’ll help you navigate the ins and outs of spray paint drying so you can achieve the perfect finish every time. Let’s get started!
How Long Does Spray Paint Take to Dry?
Spray paint typically takes about 20 minutes to dry to the touch.
However, it can take several hours or even a day or two for the paint to fully cure, depending on the humidity and temperature conditions and the type of spray paint you are using.
It is generally a good idea to wait at least 2 hours before handling the painted surface or applying a second coat of paint.
That being said, I never wait. I wait until it’s dry to the touch and do my second coat.
Steps to use spray paint
Here are the general steps for using spray paint:
- Prepare the surface: Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of any dirt, dust, or debris. Sand down rough or uneven areas and use a deglosser or primer if necessary.
- Protect your work area: Cover any surrounding surfaces with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect them from overspray.
- Shake the can of spray paint well before use to mix the paint and ensure an even application.
- Test the spray pattern, and Hold the can about 10-12 inches away from a scrap piece of paper or cardboard and test the spray pattern to make sure it is even and consistent.
- Hold the can about 10-12 inches away from the surface you are painting, Next use a sweeping motion to apply the paint in thin, even coats. Work from top to bottom and use overlapping strokes to ensure full coverage.
How Long To Wait Between Coats of Paint?
- Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer’s recommended drying time before handling or applying a second coat.
- Once you are finished painting, clean the nozzle of the can with a rag, and replace the cap. Then store the can in a cool, dry place.

What is the best Spray Paint?
The best spray paint out there is hard to say. I have used so many great ones, but I do have two favorites.
My go-to spray paint brands are Rustoleum 2X and ColorShot. Rustoleum 2X has amazing coverage and I feel like it covers in one coat most of the time.
When I went over this chippy blue basket with the hot pink and it was covered in one coat with no problems and it only took about 20 minutes to turn it and cover the entire basket.

Color Shot is also easy to find at WalMart and they have beautiful colors. ColorShot also has great coverage and generally only takes one coat to cover my projects.
I sprayed this bunny to look like chocolate and it’s the perfect color!

Why Choose Spray Paint VS Latex Paint
For me, this depends on the project and the time.
I use spray paint on small projects and big ones too.
Small projects like ceramic items, baskets, and metal home decor can be covered completely and ready to be displayed in less than 30 minutes sometimes and that is so helpful in a pinch.
Sometimes I use spray paint over furniture projects too. Spray painting primer on a piece of furniture is the best way to start with a smooth finish. You can use spray paint on outdoor furniture as well. There are some specialty spray paints just for outdoor furniture, but on a covered porch I use my go-to spray paints with no problems.
