Rustic Christmas Decor Ideas: That Are Easy to DIY
Rustic Christmas decor is a great way to add a touch of warmth and charm to your home during the holidays. It is also a relatively inexpensive style to achieve, as many materials can be found in nature or at your local craft store.
Some common elements of rustic Christmas decor include:
- Simple, understated designs
- Warm and inviting colors, such as red, green, copper, and brown
- Christmas trees decorated with natural ornaments, such as pinecones, berries, and plaid bows
- Wreaths and garlands made of fresh evergreens or at least look like fresh evergreens
- Mantle displays with stockings, candles, and rustic handmade Christmas ornaments
- Centerpieces made of pinecones, fresh fruit and berries, and other natural elements
I used to think rustic decor meant “cabin” or “lodge” but I have come to understand that my style of Christmas decor is definitely more rustic than traditional like I thought.
My friend Robyn at Robyn’s French Nest has shared easy ways to choose a Christmas theme for decorating that is helpful if you aren’t sure yet which direction you want to go this year. We are part of this amazing Bloggers Best Home Tours this week that Kelly from The Tattered Pew shares each season. You can see all the amazing Christmas inspiration at the bottom of this post.
When I put up my Christmas tree a few days ago, my walls were all painted in the cream color called Casablanca from Sherwin Williams, and I decided that it was time to pull the trigger on painting a deeper richer color that I had been thinking about to take my living room up a notch.
Like any good DIY Blogger two days before a big home tour post, I decided to wreck my entire house and paint the living room.
So I went to my local Ace Hardware and got a gallon of Benjamin Moore Regal Matte finish in the color Dark Walnut. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.
It adds so much depth to the entire space.
Creating a Rustic Christmas Atmosphere
When it comes to Christmas decorating, I always opt for a rustic, but traditional vibe. It’s a great way to add some holiday cheer to your home in a simple and beautiful way. Here are a few ideas to help you achieve that rustic Christmas feel.
Living Room Decorations
The living room is the heart of the home during the Christmas season, and it’s the perfect place to add some rustic charm. Start by decorating your Christmas tree with rustic ornaments, such as handmade ornaments, pinecone elf villages, and some last-minute painting.

DIY Rustic Christmas Decorations
Here are a few DIY rustic Christmas decoration ideas that are easy to make and will add that perfect touch of holiday cheer to your home.
In this post, How to Make a Christmas Icicle Ornament using Candle Wax, I show you how to make these beautiful ornaments that take about a minute to make and last for many years. They look better on this year’s tree than they did last year!
Handmade Ornaments
One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is to make my own painted ornaments. You can use natural elements such as baking soda and cinnamon to create beautiful rustic Christmas tree ornaments.

DIY Christmas Wreaths
Fresh wreaths are a great choice for adding a rustic feel to your home. You can incorporate natural greenery like pine trimmings and green garlands to create a beautiful wreath. You can also add in some vintage crocks, bottle brush trees, and deer heads to give it that perfect rustic charm. Another great idea is to make your own wreath using a small Christmas tree and string lights. It’s an easy project that adds a beautiful touch to your home.
Remember, the important thing is to have fun and enjoy the little things during the holiday season. Whether it’s a beautiful Christmas decoration or a hot cocoa by the fire, the little things make the holidays special.
Quilted Tree Skirt
This quilted tree skirt was made by my grandma a very long time ago. She made it for my mother and then I inherited it and it is priceless to me. This heirloom is one of my prized possessions. It may not always be the most stylish, but it brings me joy every time I look at it!
It fits perfectly with my plaid bows and my wood slice snowmen ornaments!
My little helper snuck in her favorite pink hair pony as a decoration. I think I will leave it! I love that she wants to help me! We had so much fun together painting and decorating the tree!
Tips for a Rustic Christmas Theme
As someone who loves rustic Christmas decor, I’ve learned a thing or two about creating the perfect rustic vibe for the holidays. Here are some tips to help you achieve that cozy, country cottage feel:
- Stick to a rustic style: The key to a rustic Christmas theme is to embrace the rustic style. This means using natural materials like wood, pinecones, and twine, as well as incorporating elements like plaid and evergreen branches.
- Rustic charm is important: When it comes to rustic Christmas decor, it’s all about the charm. Look for pieces that have a weathered or distressed look, or that have a handmade feel. These elements will add to the rustic feel of your decor.
- Use rustic accents: Small accents can make a big impact when it comes to creating a rustic Christmas vibe. Look for things like lanterns, candles, and mason jars to add a touch of rustic charm to your decor.
- Good use of rustic decorations: A few well-placed rustic Christmas decorations can go a long way. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different textures and materials to create a cohesive look.
- Rustic Christmas tree ornaments: Your Christmas tree is the centerpiece of your holiday decor, so make sure it fits in with your rustic theme. Look for ornaments made from natural materials like wood, or that have a rustic feel to them.
- Rustic holiday decorations are a great choice: If you’re looking to add some rustic charm to your home for the holidays, rustic holiday decorations are a great choice. Look for things like wreaths, garlands, and table runners that incorporate natural elements and textures.
Remember, the most important thing when it comes to creating a rustic Christmas theme is to have fun with it!
