Kitchen Remodel on a Budget
You probably already know that I am a kitchen remodel/cabinet painter by trade, but here’s a little secret, I haven’t remodeled my own kitchen until now. I have redecorated but not remodeled. I had to find a way to do a kitchen remodel on a budget – under $1000 to be exact!
I have always loved my job working with my homeowners to create the perfect kitchen for their style. I have made so many friends through working with clients. It was always easy for me to walk into a clients home and know almost immediately, exactly what direction to go with their kitchen remodel. From the countertops to cabinet color, it was an easy thing for me. Then I decided almost 10 years after building my own home that I was due for an update myself. I thought it would be easy for me to get this kitchen remodel on a budget together, but boy was I wrong. I have changed my mind many times and finally just decided on my cabinet color.
One thing that hindered me in my choices was the expense of things. I want a new floor but it would be a huge hunk of my remodel budget even without removing the current tile. (It is possible to go over existing tile with certain products.) So I have decided to layout classic black and white marbled vinyl as a temporary fix until I decide to put a new floor down.
Another thing that I wanted to replace was the granite, because I am adding new cabinets on a blank wall, but replacing countertops was way over budget so I decided on a butcher block top ($205 for 8 ft x 25in) on the new cabinet wall and I am soooooo happy! I love it already.
I gathered several quotes for 8 feet of cabinets to use on a blank wall in my kitchen and they all came in at well over $2500. Cabinet makers cabinets are some of my favorites, but I decided to go with stock cabinets from Home Depot instead to stay on budget. I spent $490 total for two drawer bases and one 60 inch cabinet with the space for my trash can. Which by the way is what started this whole thing in the first place.
Last but not least was the cabinet color. Green has always been the only option for me. I love the clean white that you see all over Pinterest but I adore green. Period. Narrowing down the exact green color though… that was the issue. Not too grassy not to olive. Somewhere in the middle. I have found my inspiration in a lampshade that I got from Anthropologie, and used the color Jack Pine from Benjamin Moore for the perfect shade of green.
By doing this kitchen remodel myself, I was able to splurge on some things that I wouldn’t have had the option to get if I had spent 4x as much by hiring someone. One item I splurged on was this Anthropologie lampshade along with this copper cookware to hang on the (Devol knock off) pot hanger that I made.
I hope you enjoy this kitchen remodel as much as I do and I hope you got some great ideas for your own kitchen remodel on a budget. Please do not hesitate to ask me questions if you have them!
