Custom Stained Glass Window Film: An Easy Update for Any Room
I’ve always believed that our home should be a reflection of who we are, and recently, my kitchen has undergone a transformation that truly captures who I am.
Incorporating elements that speak to my affinity for the French European aesthetic, my latest project wasn’t just an update—it was a personal statement. After giving my back door a much-needed update, with black paint and custom stained glass window film, the entire atmosphere of my kitchen shifted to align more closely with the rustic charm of a French farmhouse. The simplicity of switching out the old, cream-colored door with its tattered blinds made a world of difference.

The beauty of this transformation isn’t just in the aesthetics, but also in the newfound privacy and the subtle beams of light through the decorative window film. These window films mimic the ornate patterns of traditional stained glass, adding character and style. It’s a blend of decorative appeal, privacy, and where modern meets timeless—my kitchen now not only looks like a piece of me, it feels uniquely personal down to every last sunlit detail.
Plus it gave me the chance to replace my poor blinds that had seen better days!

Transform Your Door with DIY Custom Stained Glass Effects
What You’ll Need
You won’t believe how a few supplies will jazz up your glass door. Here’s the rundown:
- Your favorite paint color, I’m partial to a deep, matte colors
- Privacy window film that catches your eye
- Painter’s tape – I trust Frog Tape
- Soapy water – think warm water with a drop of dish soap in a spray bottle
- A damp cloth
- Squeegee, for smooth finishes
- A precision blade, like a sharp box cutter, or just scissors
Update The Door With Paint First
If you’re going to add fun pattern to the glass, you really need to give the door a fun and fresh paint update as well. Don’t be afraid to go bold and pick a fun color that you love. Take inspiration from the colors in the window film and go for it! It’s okay to go with a neutral color too and a leaded glass window film too. Both are beautiful options.
Then apply the tape. Cover the hardware – hinges, knobs, you name it – with painter’s tape and give it two thin coats of paint. You can see how I painted my front door here.
