Easy Pottery Barn Terra Cotta Pumpkin Dupe
Everyone is trying their hand at this Terra Cotta Pumpkin dupe, and so I had to give it a go!
I got this idea from my friend Jennifer at Cottage on Bunker Hill! She is the best at Pottery Barn Dupes so I took a page from her book (Post) and made my own!
These faux terra cotta pumpkins are so stinking cute! I want 100 of them to put in every nook and cranny of my house!
It’s so funny because every one that I have seen turns out a little different. My point is, that you can’t get it wrong! So there is no pressure to make it a certain way!
I have a few tricks up my sleeve for making it easy peasy!
Supplies
- Paint Powder by Amy Sadler
- Hobby Lobby Paper Mache Pumpkin
- DecoArt Americana Paint in the colors,
- Burnt Orange
- Burlap
- Oyster Beige
- Plastic cup for mixing
- Paint Brush
How I made my Terra Cotta Pumpkin
- Choose your pumpkin
I got my pumpkins at Hobby Lobby. I love the shape of these and they paint so nicely. I have seen them done on ceramic and all kinds of other pumpkins as well. If you have a pumpkin in your stash that needs updated, try this process with it!
- My paint colors
- Mix up your paint
I used three decoArt colors to make the terra cotta color. I used equal parts of the Oyster Beige and Burlap to two parts of the Burnt Orange which made my color very close to actual terra cotta.
- Paint your pumpkin
You will want to paint 100% coverage over the entire pumpkin. I did not use a texturized as my paper mache had the perfect texture already. You can do a second coat if needed.
- Allow that to dry
While your pumpkin paint is drying, prepare your Paint Powder. - Mix paint powder
Mix 1 tablespoon of paint powder with 1 tablespoon of water in a plastic cup.
- Whitewash
Use this mix sparingly, because it will go on like water and you won’t see it working until it is fully dry.
Make sure to get in the spines and the nooks and crannies to make it look authentically aged.
If you do add too much you can easily dry brush your terra cotta color over the top to correct it. - Let it fully dry
After the whitewash dries it will look like aged terra cotta!
The OG
I got my pumpkins at Hobby Lobby because I love their paper mache pumpkins. Their shape is perfect and they are so easy to paint. I feel like they look like old-time terra cotta pumpkins! You can see how I made these other styles of Copper and Bronze Patina Pumpkins and these Blue and White Painted Pumpkins with the same paper mache pumpkins.
